The new Building Act was passed through parliament in mid 2011 and will reform the way building approvals are managed in Western Australia.

The Act will now come into effect on 2 April 2012, and Building Regulations 2012 have been passed by the Parliamentary Council and Gazetted by the State Law Publisher.

The Act is intended to promote building compliance from an early stage in the design process, and aims to reduce the potential bottleneck produced when completed drawings are lodged with the Local Authority. This means that the Act will allow organisations to work with a private building surveying company to achieve a compliant building, a service that the local council currently undertakes as part of the Building Application process.

It allows private building surveyors or building certifiers to work with the developer, architect, designer or project managers towards compliance from an early stage, speeding up the building approval process.

Since last year, Code Group has been busy educating commercial property groups, architects and other stakeholders about the new legislation. The Code Group is a highly experienced and qualified Building Certification and Surveying organization, specialising in Building Code of Australia (BCA) Compliance and Access (Access to Premises) for Class 2-9 buildings.

Code Group will provide experienced and consistent advice regardless of the building’s location, ensuring the approval process runs smoothly from the beginning through to practical completion.

Director of Code Group, Gary Cox said, “We understand commercial reality, we are excited about the implementation of the New Building Act and invite anyone in the commercial building industry that would like to discuss the changes, to contact us.”

“April 2nd 2012 will mark the beginning of the new Building Certification system that will provide numerous benefits to the industry. Some of those benefits include better service, assurance and certainty and a systematic methodology to compliance that can be relied upon throughout WA”, Gary added.

Code Group offers full building certification services for commercial projects throughout Western Australia.
