SYDNEY — March 14, 2012 — LinkedIn, the world's largest professional network has surpassed three million Australian members. Globally, the site attracts more than two new members every second, and grew to more than 150 million members worldwide in February.

As part of building its presence nationally, the company also announced today they will be opening a third office in Perth. LinkedIn set up a direct presence in Australia by establishing an office in Sydney in January 2010 and opened an office in Melbourne in March 2011.

“This milestone is significant for LinkedIn, as it demonstrates that professional networking online is becoming an essential part of professional life for Australians,” said Clifford Rosenberg, Managing Director for LinkedIn in Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia. “We estimate there are around 4.8 million professionals in Australia, which means over 60 percent of Australia’s professional population is now on LinkedIn.”

Below are some interesting statistics about LinkedIn membership in Australia:
• Top three industry sectors represented on LinkedIn: IT, Financial Services and Accounting
• Top three companies represented by employees on LinkedIn: Telstra, National Australia Bank and Commonwealth Bank of Australia
• Number of Entrepreneurs: 313,734
• Number of Chefs: 5399

“Professionals in Australia are evidently realising the potential of LinkedIn as a place where their experience, connections and shared knowledge come together to enable them to grow their online brand, gain insights, as well as find new business or career opportunities,” he added.

The company also moved into a larger premise in Sydney and now has over 50 employees working across their Hiring Solutions and Marketing Solutions business groups, as well as marketing, public relations and operations support for the ANZ region.

LinkedIn has seen strong demand and response for its recruitment and marketing solutions services. The company now has over 500 Australian and New Zealand clients using its hiring solutions platform, with new customers including ANZ, John Holland Group, OneSteel and Mission Australia leveraging LinkedIn’s solutions to take a more strategic approach to hiring. Over 40 of the Top 200 ASX companies now use LinkedIn’s hiring solutions to find passive talent.

Marketers have also realised the benefits of using LinkedIn to reach out to influential, affluent and highly-educated audiences in Australia. Companies such as AustralianSuper, Tourism Australia and Microsoft have managed to connect their business to their target audience in a relevant and engaging way. Just this month, B2B marketing agency Green Hat released a study[1] which placed LinkedIn as the dominant social media platform for B2B marketers at 75%.
