Merged organisations face many challenges. One of the many hurdles such organisations face, and possibly one of the hardest to overcome, is the consolidation of disparate IT systems. One organisation alone may employ thousands of applications – some critical, some out-of-date and some that are only used by a handful of employees. Updating and integrating the IT system of a large organisation is already a challenging task for any IT personnel, but trying to achieve this across one or two organisations is even more difficult. So why would organisations even attempt to merge?

“One of the many intended benefits of merging organisations is the cost savings that can be had through the consolidation of IT systems. This is much easier said than done, however not impossible,” commented Kareem Tawansi, CEO of software development provider, Solentive Software.

“There are two major challenges that organisations will face when attempting to merge IT systems.

  1. What systems will be kept in place after the merger? That is, will the systems of one organisation be replaced by the other, will there be new systems, will there be a combination of old and new systems or will there be a combination of both organisations’ systems?
  2. Selling the vision of the new environment to ALL interested parties.

“The latter may be the harder of the two to overcome. Often, existing systems come with existing staff who have an idea that is formed from their association with particular systems. These people are usually hesitant towards the idea of change. Overcoming this challenge may be somewhat of a political campaign, but if done well, will be well worth the effort and costs involved,” advised Kareem.

The long-term benefits of achieving a unified standard operating environment (SOE) are:

  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Increased productivity
  • Streamlined and efficient execution of business processes
