A Queensland based safety expert has been honoured by the government of the People's Republic of China for his contribution to work safety and economic development in the North East region of China.
Mr John Ninness has been conferred the award by the Chinese State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs. He will receive the award from Liaoning Province’s Governor Mr. Chen Zhenggao on Tuesday 22nd September 2009 at a special ceremony to be held at the headquarters of the Liaoning Provincial Government, Shenyang, North East China.
The Friendship Award is given to a very select number of foreigners for their unique and substantial contributions to the economic, social and technological development of Liaoning Province. Approximately 20-30 foreigners are expected to receive the award each year. The ceremony, in Shenyang, will be attended by leaders from the State Council's Foreign Experts Bureau as well as leading members of the provincial and municipal government.
Mr Ninness said he “was most honoured to receive the award from the Chinese Government.” He added, “It is a privilege to be able to work in China as an Australian foreign expert and seek to improve work safety there. The Chinese people are very friendly and hospitable and are keen to work with Australia to build economic and social relationships.”
Liaoning used to be China's main industrial base in China's Northeast, a part of the country often known as China's rust belt because of the prevalence of numerous large, older industrial plants, many of which were built with Russian assistance in the 1950s. With the Chinese government's initiative for "revitalization of the Northeast region," Liaoning has been nurturing a base of new high-tech industries that aspire to become competitive at the global level across a number of key sectors. At the same time, Liaoning also is trying to maintain its position as an important base for equipment manufacturing and raw materials through further opening up and reform.
Mr Ninness is believed to be the first Australian living outside of China to receive the prestigious award. Margaret Fisher who lives and works in China as a teacher with the Shenyang Institute of Aeronautical Engineering also won the award in 2007.
Mr Ninness is a Chartered Professional Member of the Safety Institute of Australia and a member of the Australia China Business Council.
