IEC61850 secondary control systems’ technology gets energised

Being the first electricity transmission company to implement the IEC61850 secondary control systems’ technology in Australia, ElectraNet aims to set new benchmarks for the design and development of state-of-the-art substation architecture and support systems in the Australian electricity transmission network industry.

We are currently working through final steps for the design and development of a secondary control system at the new Clare North Substation, facilitating the trial development of this new IEC61850 secondary control systems’ technology. ElectraNet are working with SIEMENS Ltd to implement this new technology.

IEC61850 is a relatively new technology for substation secondary control systems, potentially enabling substantial savings in design, construction, commissioning and maintenance.

IEC61850 has the potential to energise the whole industry.

This technology will be fundamental in integrating all protection, control, measurement and monitoring functions within the substation, while providing the means for high speed substation protection applications, interlocking and intertripping. The substation architecture will be designed to take full advantage of the convenience of Ethernet communications with a level of performance and security essential in substations today.

The Clare North project offers ElectraNet the opportunity to assess and develop a unique solution which is capable of meeting the varying operational conditions and environmental characteristics present within our South Australian environment. Over time ElectraNet will be able to provide these advanced technologies through a commercialised process to customers.

Advances in technology such as these provide the potential for application in future electricity infrastructure projects.

ElectraNet Executive Manager, Mr Greg Rice said, “The team are excited by the developments with this project seeking to enable the business to operate, maintain and manage ElectraNet’s assets that are built to IEC61850 technology in an ongoing manner producing long term substantial savings in design, construction, commissioning and maintenance.”
