Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 - Strategic Marine
Western Australian shipbuilder Strategic Marine continues to grow its Fabrication & Engineering Division, securing a contract to build five pontoons and associated structures for the Sydney Harbour Wharf Upgrade Program.

Strategic Marine will deliver the pontoons by mid 2012 under a subcontractor arrangement with maritime construction company Waterway Construction, which has in turn been subcontracted by Hansen Yuncken, the Managing Contractor.

The objectives of the Sydney Harbour Wharf Upgrade Program are to repair, renew and upgrade berthing structures and passenger facilities.

Strategic Marine Chief Marketing Officer Terry O'Connor said the contract was a "great win" for the company in its goal to rapidly expand its Fabrication & Engineering Division.

"In the past 12 months we have intensified our efforts to diversify our business and this includes moving into providing fabrication and engineering services for the very buoyant resources and energy sectors in Australia and PNG," Mr O'Connor said.

"Operating facilities in Asia gives us the ability to deliver cost effective and quality solutions for our rapidly growing local client base, built upon developing strong relationships.

"It is very exciting to have the opportunity to work with the team at Waterway Construction on the Sydney Harbour program as we build momentum and secure further contracts in the booming infrastructure market right across Australia.

"In the past two months we have secured contracts with John Holland for fabrication and design of infrastructure for the QCLNG and GLNG projects in Queensland.

"In addition to the successes we are achieving on the eastern seaboard, we have also established a fast-response repair and servicing operation in Karratha, in Western Australia’s North West."

Mr O'Connor said Strategic Marine's goal was to continue to expand its service offerings to complement and build on the success of its traditional ship building businesses in WA, Vietnam, Singapore and Mexico.

"Our competitive advantage is the ability to reduce fabrication costs through the efficiencies of our Vietnam and Singapore shipyards, backed by the quality assurance of having an Australian management team driving every project," Mr O'Connor said.
