THE AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION Inc. :Teaching of Scientific Theories

The Australian Science Teachers Association is a not for profit federation of the Australian state and territory science teachers associations. Our mission is to promote the science teaching profession and enrich and support quality science teaching. The Australian Science Teachers Association acknowledges that there are many scientific theories and that these theories may evolve over time as new evidence becomes available.

The Australian Science Teachers Association position is that scientific theories and models are based on the examination of all of the available evidence that is the result of high quality, peer reviewed scientific research.

The Australian Science Teachers Association therefore actively promotes teaching methodologies that allow students to base their decision making regarding these theories, upon sound scientific knowledge, an understanding of the quality of evidence used in the construction of that scientific knowledge and to critically analyse any claims made in the light of the scientific evidence.

This is the official position of the Australian Science Teachers Association.
