“I’ve written to Mojo today to congratulate her on being the first deaf New Zealander elected to their Parliament.” Mr Gibson said

“I like many in Australia were watching the outcome of the New Zealand election closely to see if Ms Mathers would get over the line and we are excited to see the final result.”

Mr Gibson who is well known for his work in the Queensland Parliament in representing people with disabilities is himself the child of two deaf parents and said many in the deaf community would now be following Ms Mathers career closely.”

"Today we see another barrier being broken down for disabled people by a disabled person.”

“I will be watching closely the New Zealand Parliament to see what changes will occur to improve accessibility for Ms Mathers and everyone in the Deaf community.”
