Friday, December 2nd, 2011 - Workpower Incorporated

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), celebrated on 3 December each year, aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being. It is also about increasing awareness of the benefits of integrating people with disability in every aspect of life; be it political, social, economic or cultural.

Workpower Incorporated, one of Western Australia’s leading community benefits organisations, has been supporting people with disability since 1992 and providing a range of support services and employment programs for people with disability and people with mental illness.

Almost 4 million Australians have a disability. That’s one in five people. For some of those people, who are ready, willing and able, the difference between working and not working is opportunity. Aspire Employment is Workpower’s Disability Employment Service, assisting people with disability and people with mental illness secure and maintain employment in the open labour market.

The OpportuniTea is an event to encourage more employers to consider the many benefits of hiring people with disability.

Aspire Employment believes that productivity comes with matching a person to the right job, but to do this, employers need to be ‘disability confident’.

Aspire Employment’s General Manager of Disability Employment Services, Natalie Sgro’, said “Disability confidence is a term used to inspire employers to open their minds about the benefits and value of expanding their pool of candidates. Unfortunately, some negative attitudes and misconceptions about the employment of people with disability still exist. We find many employers are open-minded, but lack the confidence to give it a go.”

“This where Aspire can help. Employers tell us they like the fact that Disability Employment Service providers assist with on-the-job support. This gives employers confidence and reassurance when it comes to employing people with disability and people with mental illness. The current skills shortage is a great opportunity for employers to ‘think outside the box’ when it comes to recruitment. ”

The OpportuniTea will be held in the west end of the courtyard at the QV.1 building at 10am, Friday 2 December. Workpower staff will be on hand to chat to visitors and hand out morning tea and information. There will also be a special performance by the children from Western Lion’s Cheerability Squad.

This event is proudly sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
The QV1 building is at 250 St Georges Terrace, Perth. The courtyard is on the Hay Street side of the building.
