With Australia’s charity and not-for-profit sector under increasing scrutiny, today’s launch of a national directory focused on these organisations is a potential game changer. The Commonwealth Government has established the Office for the Not For Profit Sector and Treasury will soon establish the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

Connecting Up, itself a not-for-profit, has just launched the Connecting Up Directory of Not-for-Profits and Charities,, providing an initial listing of some 45,000 organisations.

Connecting Up’s vision is to connect not-for-profits with the community, with each other, with funders, with government and with business.

Until now, unlike other comparable countries, Australia has had no substantial online directory focused purely on not-for-profit organisations and charities.

The need for the directory has been widely recognised within the Australian not-for-profit sector, including by the Reverend Tim Costello AO, Chair of the Community Council for Australia and CEO of World Vision, who says “We commend Connecting Up for taking the initiative to develop the Connecting Up Directory of Australian Not-for-Profit and Charity Organisations and we encourage organisations to be actively involved in providing the information needed to make it a success.”

Leslie Hems, Director of Research at the Centre of Social Impact at the University of NSW says, “I urge all nonprofits and charities to support this initiative and take the opportunity to provide the Directory information online. I would also like to encourage other agencies to promote the Directory to the millions of Australians who benefit from the products and services provided by Australian not-for-profit and community organisations and also the millions of Australians who volunteer and donate to them.”

Doug Jacquier, Connecting Up CEO, says “We are proud to provide an interactive platform that ensures a basic level of representation on the web for all not-for-profits. This website will provide the opportunity to contribute content, connect with other organisations and access resources that build the capacity of these community-based organisations that are striving to make our community a better place.”

Connecting Up has over 30 years of experience in developing and managing community and not-for-profit sector information, and has become a leading organisation in the not-for-profit sector, with a national and international reputation for its work in the not-for-profit sector.
