SRA Information Technology, the company behind EnviroSys, one of the world's leading environmental management software solutions, will celebrate their 20th anniversary in the new year.
SRA began life in Adelaide in 1992. In a similar story to that of many successful IT companies, owner and CEO, Steve Rowe, started SRA as a one-man operation and expanded steadily, spreading across Australia and Asia where the company now has offices in Adelaide, Darwin, Perth, Canberra and Singapore.
The evolution of SRA's flagship product, EnviroSys, has seen it transform from a comparatively simple environmental database commissioned by the SA EPA in the mid 1990s, into Australia's leading enterprise Environmental Data Management System that is being employed by the world's largest resource companies such as BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto. The success of EnviroSys both locally and internationally within these organisations, now has them looking at global deployments. The software is installed for use at nearly 100 sites in Australia, Africa, North America and Asia and is monitoring around 100,000 environmental data feeds.
"Our current challenge is to manage environmental data on a global scale whilst still supporting regional variants of legislation, metrics and time. ‘It can prove to be quite complex but EnviroSys handles it well," Steve Rowe commented. "We are looking at some large global roll-outs that will take the solution to the next level in terms of global reporting and compliance."
Far from being a resource sector specific solution, EnviroSys is also deployed in a number of other industries for a variety of purposes. "The impending Carbon Tax is creating interest in EnviroSys' ability to meet the growing need for carbon accounting and where clients are looking to be able to accept, consolidate and report large volumes of data in real time," said Steve Rowe.
A local example, the Adelaide City Council uses EnviroSys to monitor and manage energy usage across their city property portfolio in an effort to cut carbon emissions by 60% by 2012 and on their way to being carbon neutral by 2020.
Whilst SRA continues to develop and support environmental solutions out of its Adelaide CBD office, it also continues to grow in the general IT space. Steve explains, "We've built our reputation on custom software solutions and we continue to generate a substantial proportion of our revenue with these projects."
SRA has maintained a particular strength in the administration of Natural Resources in South Australia, Western Australia and ACT. Notably, the Adelaide team recently built the South Australian Resource Information Geo-server solution (SARIG 2020) which combines clever spatial technologies with some sophisticated design and flexible management tools. The SARIG website, developed for PIRSA, has been ranked number one in the world by Canada's Fraser Institute and provides an exceptional online data resource for exploration companies currently investing and looking to invest in South Australia.
SRA has accepted many awards over the years, including Telstra's Australian Business of the Year, Australian Information Industry Association, SA Top 20 Innovation Awards, South Australian Engineering and ICT Awards. In addition, Steve Rowe is a member of the Reserve Bank SME Advisory Panel and the IT Innovation Council.
The South Australian office of SRA has recently moved to their new, larger CBD premises at 25 Franklin Street. They are celebrating the opening of their new office and their impending 20th anniversary with a function for current and previous clients and staff on December 7.
