Saturday, November 12th, 2011 - Roy Morgan Research
As of July 2011, Canterbury had the most fans of any ITM Cup team with 421,000 supporters (aged 14+). They are followed by Auckland with 344,000 and Wellington with 290,000, according to recently released Roy Morgan Research sports data.

After the top three clubs there is a significant drop off in supporter numbers with Waikato coming in at number four with 182,000 supporters. Numbers for each club gradually decline to Manawatu on 54,000.

However among the top three supported teams there were differences in the professional sporting events they attended. The proportion of Wellington supporters who had attended a Rugby Union game in the previous 12 months (30%) narrowly overcame Canterbury supporters (29%) and Auckland supporters (22%).

Although supporters of each club were more likely to attend a Rugby Union game than any other sport, Auckland supporters fell behind the other two clubs in this regard. They were however far more likely to attend a Rugby League game then both Canterbury and Wellington supporters.

When it came to watching sport on television, Wellington supporters again led the way with 83% indicating they “almost always” or “occasionally” watch Rugby Union on TV, compared with 78% of Canterbury supporters and 77% of Auckland supporters.

Norman Morris, Industry Communications Director, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“Over the past nine years, Canterbury has generally held the highest number of supporters of any team in the ITM Cup. After coming off a premiership win in 2011 they currently enjoy the highest number of supporters.

“A lower proportion of Auckland supporters seem to attend Rugby Union games than supporters of both Canterbury and Wellington, although this is likely due to their increased interest in their NRL team - the New Zealand Warriors (formerly known as the Auckland Warriors).”
