John Grimes, the Chief Executive of Australia’s peak solar industry body – the Australian Solar Energy Society (AuSES) – held a press conference in Canberra today in response to the Auditor General’s report on the NSW Solar Bonus Scheme.

Grimes, and many other leaders in the solar industry, have always contended that the original scheme was poorly designed and overly generous. Neither the solar industry nor NSW residents are not to blame for the blow-out in the NSW Solar Bonus Scheme.

Rather than looking back, the NSW Government now has an opportunity to demonstrate clean energy leadership.

“AuSES is keen to work with the Government to design a fair and affordable solar program so NSW residents can take control of their electricity bills,” said Grimes.

According to Grimes the key points are:

* “The Auditor General’s Report validates figures submitted by AuSES and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) about the real cost of the scheme."

* "In NSW the power companies do not have to pay for solar power fed into the grid. The government could choose to pass these costs on to the utility companies and put downwards pressure on electricity prices."

* "The old scheme was not fair – but having no program is also not fair.”

Grimes is calling on governments across Australia to implement a nationally consistent fair price for solar.

The solar industry is keen to provide expert policy advice to establish a sustainable, affordable scheme that takes full advantage of NSW’s fantastic solar potential.

“More than ever, solar makes sense,” Grimes said. “Governments should be providing a fair price for solar to allow Australians to make their own contribution to the clean energy future.”
