Members of the remote Indigenous community of Hope Vale in Queensland are broadening their employment skills as they take part in a new Asset Maintenance training program being offered by Jobfind Centres Australia.

In Hope Vale on the Cape York Peninsula of Queensland, a group of Indigenous Australians working in the local Hope Vale Garden Market are improving their employability by completing Certificate I and Certificate II training in Asset Maintenance.

The Garden Market Community Development Employment Project (CDEP), operated by Jobfind Centres Australia and funded by the Federal Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), has been operating since 1999 and has helped to develop the work skills of many Hope Vale men and women while improving the services available to the community – particularly with regards to fresh fruit and vegetables.

With the recent addition of 8 weeks of formal training in Asset Maintenance, the CDEP participants are gaining practical training in properly maintaining, cleaning and managing their workplace and its equipment, as well as planning and management of safety when maintaining equipment used in the workplace.

“The skills obtained from the training are not only beneficial to the Hope Vale community in terms of helping to maintain the Market Garden and its tractors, mowers and tools, but the program is also helping CDEP participants to improve their employment prospects, self-esteem and self-worth”, said Simon Rodgers, General Manager of Jobfind’s CDEP Operations.

Following the completion of the program, a number of employment opportunities will open up for the participants within the Sports Precinct Development CDEP, which includes the construction of a local sports field, BMX track and the building of a dam. With their new qualifications in maintaining construction equipment, the participants now have a greater chance of being selected to work on a number of these local projects to further develop the facilities available to the Hope Vale community.
