Tuesday, October 4th, 2011 - OpportUNIty S.A.
This year the Australian Research Council expects to fund research projects to the tune of $2.9 billion. The world-class research outcomes from public research funding in South Australia will be on show at the 2011 Innovation Showcase.

Australian tax payers provide the funds necessary for the Australian government’s competitive grant programs that are needed to pay for publicly funded research and development. However, the Australian public is often unaware of what the results and real benefits are from this publicly funded R&D. This will be remedied for South Australia at least, when the Australian innovation community converges in Adelaide in October for the inaugural OpportUNIty S.A Innovation Showcase.

As an example of the Australian appetite for public research funding, in 2011 the Australian Research Council expects to fund research projects to the tune of $2.9 billion and the National Health and Medical Research Council expects to fund health research amounting to an additional $746 million. Clearly Australia has maintained a strong commitment over many years to funding public research.

“While cutting edge science is critical,” says Greg Boundy, CEO of Innovate SA, “public funding of research also includes training people to assist in the translation of these discoveries into the marketplace, which can be equally if not more important. South Australia is fortunate to have great capabilities in this space, as well as organisations like Innovate SA which can further build that capability.”

This month the world-class research outcomes from public research funding in South Australia will be on display as experts from Flinders University, the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, come together to present their ideas, capabilities and technologies. This event will clearly demonstrate the benefits of public research funding and display how the government objectives of promoting research, improving healthcare, and stimulating economic growth are realised.

Representatives from industry, government and the venture capital community are encouraged to attend, and make of the most of this unique opportunity to learn more about the latest innovation solutions on offer from the three South Australian Universities.
