Tuesday, September 13th, 2011 - A word from the Think Inc Organisers
This Sunday, 18th September, Melbourne will host a remarkable collection of people for a one-day public conference at the Melbourne Convention Centre. Speakers include:
• Neil deGrasse Tyson, the astrophysicist who “dumped Pluto”, advises US Presidents on space policy and who will present the sequel to Cosmos, the epic TV documentary by Carl Sagan

• Michael Shermer, head of the Skeptics Society and author of The Believing Brain, who exposes fallacies behind intelligent design, 0/11 conspiracy theories, low-carb diets and alien sightings.

• Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who is described as one of the bravest women in the world. Somali-born and subjected to genital mutilation, the author of Infidel is an outspoken advocate for women’s oppression in Africa and the Middle East. She lives with round-the-clock security and will speak via video link.

Other speakers include Christopher Hitchens (via video), Tim Flannery, Father Bob Maguire, Cristina Rad, Shane Koyczan and hosted by Josh Thomas.

A word from the Think Inc Organisers

When we were kids, we were amazed by the world. We were fascinated by everything that we came in contact with; everything required closer inspection and scrutiny. Our parents would tell us about the hardships they had growing up; they’d tell us about the close-mindedness of forgotten eras that caused so much pain and suffering in the world; they’d tell us about the lack of technological innovation that made everyday life all the more difficult.

We didn’t worry about any of that, though, because this was the future, and we were a part of it.

As we grew older, we realised that we may not have been correct. Close-mindedness still permeated nearly all facets of society; critical thought seemed like something to be admonished rather than applauded; ignorance, intolerance and fear-of-change stifled social change.

We’ve come far. But imagine how far we could have come.
