With more notifications of whooping cough in Australia than ever before and fifty-one per cent higher incidence than 2010 YTD1, the need for comprehensive, up-to-date and engaging information about whooping cough has never been more critical.
The site has been developed by vaccines manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur and offers easy to use and interactive tools such as an Australian map with information tailored by State, a 10 question quiz and Facebook sharing in order to help spread the message.
"Pertussis is a severe illness of early childhood," says Dr Chris Ingall, Paediatrician from Lismore. "This website will help parents to know what to look for and when to act.''
In response to the pertussis outbreak, several Australian States have implemented adult pertussis vaccination programs to help cocoon babies who are too young to be adequately protected. With each State having different eligible groups, providers and program dates, this can be confusing for new parents.
‘'New parents can quickly and easily find the information that is relevant to them," said Dr Ingall. "You only need to click on your State, and it shows current whooping cough notifications and programs."
Families who have grandparents living in another State of Australia will also benefit from the site, as now all the information needed for State specific vaccination programs can be found in one place.
The site also features a video to help users recognise the symptoms of whooping cough and appreciate the seriousness of the disease.
If new parents or other close contacts of a newborn have questions about how to prevent whooping cough, they should visit www.whoopingcough.com.au and combine this with a visit to their family doctor for professional advice.
