Vast Interior, an Australian owned franchise retailer specialising in culturally inspired, eco-friendly, hand-crafted home furniture and homewares since 1999, recently turned 10 and is showing no signs of slowing down with new product lines and further expansion plans on the horizon.
The franchise has already reported a 10% growth on last year and is poised to open more new stores in NSW, Victoria and New Zealand over the next 12 months.
Earlier this year, Queensland welcomed two new stores in Townsville and Toowoomba while another is set to open in Narabeen, New South Wales this month. Since opening the first store in Toormina, Coffs Harbour in 1999, Vast Interior now has 40 franchised stores throughout the East Coast of Australia and New Zealand.
Despite the recent news of similar Australian owned furniture franchise chains (specialising in east Asian imported furniture) rocked by recession woes , Vast Interior Founder and CEO, Ross Clayton sees no bumps in the road ahead as the group continues to go from strength to strength.
“As we expand we are careful to stick by our original mantra of “good value, exclusive designs and maintaining the (furniture) passion”, said Mr Clayton.
Importing furniture from East Asia in today’s competitive retail market is not uncommon but few reputable Australian owned retailers have managed to secure the quality and variety expressed in Vast Interior stores. With a core signature range designed and manufactured in India and made exclusively for Vast Interior stores, the group has carved a unique niche in the furniture importing market and built lasting relationships with quality suppliers.
“Vast’s strength in product and buying power is built upon solid business relationships with the group’s global suppliers. We are about to introduce six new dining and living ranges over the next few months and one of our exclusive core suppliers recently set up a new factory to cope with demand, which means our new product potential is amazing” Mr Clayton said.
Perhaps one of the most understated furniture and homewares brands, Vast Interior has been a quiet achiever and for the individuals who discover the world of Vast, it’s just the way they like it.
Vast Interior stores operate successfully in creating a brand where each store is different. Franchisees are provided with superior supplier connections and a portfolio rich in exclusively designed products but are also given the freedom to travel and source their own unique products and found pieces. The result is that stores that offer infinite variety and individual sought after collections.
Captivated by the delicately crafted sustainable solid timber designs, made by hand, eye and heart exclusively for Vast, many loyal customers travel from store to store to source that ‘special’ old piece. These ‘Vasties’ as Brisbane based Founder and CEO Ross Clayton affectionately calls them, have been the cornerstone of the business taking Vast from one store to 40 stores.
“We have customers that travel right down the east coast of Australia scoping out new pieces, and because our stock is constantly changing with arrivals from around the world, there’s always something new and ‘old’ in store. Some store owners have been known to go the extra mile and source special pieces for Vasties whilst on buying trips.” Mr Clayton said.
The product range of Vast Interior consists of dining, living and patio furniture with each showroom offering infinite variety with an individual eclectic mix of eastern cultural designs for the home. The collections capture a world of colour, heritage and quality craftsmanship and are sourced or designed in India, Indonesia and China. Vast have always been committed to protecting the environment and the choice of timbers reflect this. Recycled timbers are used where possible and also plantation and salvaged timbers form the brands signature dining collections.
From the opening of the first store in Toormina, Coffs Harbour in 1999, Founder and CEO, Ross Clayton, combined his passions of travel, community involvement and furniture design. The idea was to create a unique imported furniture and homewares store that maximised economies of scale to deliver exclusive design and functionality at a great price-point. Vast Interior now has over 40 stores throughout the East Coast of Australia, and New Zealand (Christchurch and Wellington).
Vast Interior stores operate successfully in a niche market offering high quality furniture to consumers at reasonable prices. We supply a fantastic array of interesting and beautiful pieces, blending exotic cultures and eclectic style from locations including India, China, Vietnam and Indonesia.
Vast Interior capitalizes on its history of success and the high demand for its products in Australia and New Zealand by continuing to focus on its areas of expertise and reputation for high quality unique products at affordable prices.
Vast Interior products are “lifestyle” products. We promote “high perceived value” by selling premium quality exotic and unique furniture and home wares to consumers who enjoy an above average degree of purchasing power and lifestyle.
The markets in which Vast Interior stores operate tend to be localized to certain regions, so the nature of our competition depends to a significant degree on a particular location and a number of variables within it (such as the kind of substitutes that may exist for Vast Interior products in terms of relative quality, style and price).
At Vast Interior we are conscious about the environment and our choice of timbers reflect this. We use recycled timbers where possible and also plantation and salvaged timbers.
