SeaLink is on track to resume ferry services to and from Kangaroo Island on Thursday.

Services have been disrupted due to the annual survey and maintenance of the Spirit of Kangaroo Island ferry and an untimely mechanical breakdown on the Sealion 2000 ferry.

Mr Jeff Ellison, SeaLink’s Managing Director, said work was continuing today on repairing the gearbox on the luxury 50 metre Sealion 2000.

“A part was flown to Adelaide today and will be fitted later today.”

Mr Ellison said a fuel cooling issue had also risen on the Sealion 2000 on Monday and was being worked on by a specialist engineering company.

“As safety of our passengers and crew is paramount, we had no other option but to shut down the service yesterday.

Mr Ellison said SeaLink was working around the clock and doing everything it could to enable both ferries to be back in operation as quickly as possible.

It was hoped the Spirit of Kangaroo Island which was on the slip at Osborne would be back in service by Thursday evening.

Island supplies of food, fuel and milk have been impacted by the disruption and SeaLink will make the ferrying of supplies to the island a priority once services resume.

Mr Ellison said SeaLink had chartered a plane on Monday to transfer people to Adelaide who had international air connections and Rex Airlines scheduled an extra evening departure from Kingscote.
