EVER wanted to act – but been too scared to try?

Experienced actor and director Matt Longman wants to take people on a journey through acting skills and techniques so they can be better prepared for auditions, ready to perform on stage.

This September and October he is hosting a series of acting classes at the Blue Room Theatre and Koorliny Arts Centre to help beginners wanting to tread the boards for the first time.

“I see a lot of people trying to get their foot in the door at auditions but it’s often a catch-22 situation,” Longman said.

“People need experience to audition correctly but they need to audition in the right way to gain that experience.

“For this reason, the first series of classes is targeted specifically at beginners.”

Involved with a variety of theatres since age 17, including Skipping Stone, BSX, Playlovers, Harbour, Old Mill, Deckchair, the WA Youth Theatre Company, Irish Theatre Players and the WA Academy of Performing Arts, Longman was nominated in the annual Finley Awards for directing The Pillowman last year.

He recently directed A Lie of the Mind for Blak Yak Theatre, was assistant director to Marisa Garreffa on Aesop and his Fables at Barking Gecko Theatre Company and also performed in Chekhov’s Three Sisters at the Dolphin Theatre.

With his acting classes, Longman said people can expect a relaxed, open environment with an emphasis on play and personal experimentation.

“In each session, we will work scenes from different plays and focus on different areas of constructing a performance, such as gestures, intonation, rhythms, beats and pauses, voice and character,” he said.

“At the end of the sessions, actors should have a bag of tricks they can begin to work with.”

One of the motivations that inspired Longman to hold acting classes was simple – he believes Perth desperately needs more quality performers.

“It's not an art,” he said. “Very little of what happens on stage is innate or unachievable.

“You don't just begin one day and know how to do it.

“Instinct helps but learning the basic craft will liberate these instincts and pave the way for better performances.

“People have to start somewhere and I hope this will bolster the numbers in Perth theatre.”

The classes will be held at the Blue Room Theatre at 2pm, September 4, 11 and 18 and 7pm, September 6, 13 and 20 and Koorliny Arts Centre at 2pm, October 16, 23 and 30 and 7pm, October 11, 18 and 25.

Each class is $30 over a period of six two-hour sessions – book via [email protected]

The Blue Room Theatre is at 53 James Street, Northbridge, in the Perth Cultural Centre. The Koorliny Arts Centre is on Sulphur Road, Kwinana.
