THE best plumbing apprentices in the State will be showing off the top tools of their trade on Friday 12th August, as part of the Apprentice of the Year Awards for the Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of WA.

Twelve MPGA finalists will take part in a practical competition at the organisations’ headquarters in Maylands so they can be assessed on a range of trade skills, alongside the MPA Skills Open Day and State Worldskills competition.

Third and fourth-year plumbing apprentices showing excellence in personal, academic and workplace development will be assessed on gas-fitting, welding and brazing, sanitary plumbing and general plumbing skills.

MPA Group CEO Murray Thomas said it was an opportunity to showcase the talent and skills on offer from up-and-coming apprentices, giving them the recognition they deserve.

“These awards reflect our strong commitment to the training of high-quality apprentices because we want to ensure a bright future for this industry,” he said.

“It’s important we promote professional and ethical business practices at the training stage and educate our apprentices on the required trade standards.

“This way, the health and safety of the public will be maintained, thanks to well-qualified tradesmen who received appropriate training while apprentices’

“The Apprentice of the Year Award is a prestigious accolade and a good stepping stone for recognition in the industry, 2011 sees the Apprentice of the Year gaining entry into the Worldskills Australia competition in 2012”

Energy, Training and Workforce Development Minister Peter Collier will be visiting the competition and open day from 9am

Winners of the MPGA Apprentice of the Year Awards will be announced at a gala dinner on November 19 .

The Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of WA and Master Painters Australia are located at 106 Caledonian Avenue, Maylands.
