After picking up the WA Telstra Business Award for Regional and Small Business, Margaret River's Gnarabar hopes to leverage the exposure to improve generational and industry perspectives.

Gnarabar Owner/Operator, Anthony Janssen, has released a video interview (http://youtu.be/6qCUhuEchr0) to tell his story of Gnarabar and how he was able to turn a failing business into a business success.

The 4minute video takes the viewer from Anthony's arrival in Margaret River, as a 23 year old backpacker, to the evolution of a niche bar and restaurant business network, including two restaurants, an outdoor wedding catering service and take-away facility, located at the picturesque beachside location of Gnarabup Beach, Margaret River.
He humbly pays credit to the local community who have supported him in what could otherwise be described as a series of impossible tasks.

However, it is his focus on inspiring and providing opportunity to young staff, and his efforts to change industry perceptions that have compelled him to tell his story.

"Our business model attempts to provide staff with something more rewarding than money. The lure is to be part of a young dynamic team, regardless of experience. With reflection on my own personal background, I recognise what can be achieved when young people are given opportunity," he said.

"I believe my story is a good example of what can be achieved when energy is channelled effectively."

The revamped Gnarabar turned over almost $1million in its first year, and today has a turnover of around $2.5million.

Gnarabar

Gnarabar is niche bar and restaurant business network, including two restaurants, an outdoor wedding catering business and take-away facility, located at the picturesque beachside location of Gnarabup Beach, Margaret River.

The business uses economies-of-scale to provide long-term employment and services to a loyal local patronage and tourist market.

Gnarabar caters to bistro dining, as well as hosts regular live music and wine tasting events. It also services the local community with a take-away food option, as other outlets are located some 10km away.

The White Elephant Beach Café has to date been operating with cafe cuisine for daytime patrons, but is about to go undergo construction to provide an all-year-round Ala Carte venue for the beachside community and tourism market.

And, with a unique license that allows off-site catering within the Gnarabup/Prevelly area, ‘Barefoot Beach Weddings’ was recently soft launched to accommodate the increase of outdoor weddings. The business formalises a service that has been available for some time.
