Local digital & direct marketing agency, Via Media, has picked up the Adelaide Metro digital business from the Department for Transport Energy & Infrastructure in a competitive pitch. The contract, which includes redeveloping the online and mobile presence for Adelaide Metro, is intended to deliver a simpler, more user friendly experience for South Australia’s public transport customers.

“This is not just about a shiny new website. ” says DTEI’s Director Customer Experience for Public Transport Services, Andrea Higgs. “With major investments in public transport infrastructure being rolled out, the next step is helping our customers understand how to get from A to B, regardless of whether they need a bus, train or tram – or a combination of all three – to get there. The website and related mobile assets will be critical to how we deliver that information.”

Government as a data provider, rather than just a service provider, is a relatively new concept and transit agencies are increasingly embracing these Open Data principles to dramatically improve the way that people access and personalise transport information. “If I’m travelling from Mile End to Mawson Lakes every day, I don’t really need or care about the reams of information available for stops North and South of that segment”, said Via Media’s MD Jason Neave. “Customisation and personalisation of timetable information has become standard in progressive cities around the world, and we’re looking forward to helping Andrea and her team at DTEI bring the same level of service to South Australians.”

In addition to improving the public transport customer experience, State and Federal governments have also targeted Greenhouse gas emissions from traffic congestion and overuse of motor cars as one area in Australia’s commitments to slowing down climate change. Increased use of public transport is the primary means of making a meaningful impact in those emissions and who knows - if getting to work or a football game on public transport is easier than driving, who would brave Adelaide’s peak-hour parking lots any more?
