Connecting Taxis and Passengers

SYDNEY – 25 July 2011: Two Sydney entrepreneurs have changed the way we order taxis forever, with a free smart phone app that makes life easier for passengers and drivers alike.

Thanks to goCatch, a new iPhone app, taxi passengers can see exactly where nearby available taxis are and book them directly through their smart phones. They can then see the location of their taxi in real-time as it approaches on the map. It saves time calling up to make a booking and removes the uncertainty of when a taxi will arrive; no more standing in queues, or waiting outside in the cold!

It's the brain-child of Andrew Campbell and Ned Moorfield, who started the operation with prize money from two innovation competitions: the Peter Farrell Cup and John Heine Entrepreneurial Challenge.

"goCatch connects drivers and customers without the middle-man," says Campbell. "It means no waiting in queues or wandering the streets looking for a cab with a light on."

goCatch is already a hit with taxi drivers, who see available jobs and are notified through their iPhone when nearby bookings become available. More than 700 drivers signed-up in Melbourne and Sydney in the first two weeks of the app being in the App Store. Anne Turner, President of the NSW Taxi Drivers Association, is a keen supporter of the app, which provides a valuable additional source of bookings, as well as saving time and fuel when locating customers. "goCatch empowers taxi drivers and puts control of their jobs directly into their hands," she says.

Andrew Campbell says the benefits it provides drivers is particularly rewarding. "We designed the app with passengers in-mind. After we spoke to hundreds of taxi drivers though, we realised the importance of reducing unproductive time on the road. They work long hours and have no guarantee of a minimum wage. We’re proud to have created something that will contribute to making their industry fairer and more efficient.”

Campbell and Moorfield expect very strong take-up of the app. "The more people using the app - drivers and passengers - the better it works, so we’re encouraging everybody to spread the word" says Moorfield, goCatch's head of product development, who prior to goCatch played a key role at Macquarie Bank in launching Macquarie Edge, an innovative online share trading platform.

Moorfield says the app will evolve quickly, with ongoing development and enhancements to continue including Facebook integration and the ability for passengers to rate drivers. "You'll also be able to choose favourite drivers and send bookings to those drivers you know and trust. It'll help build loyalty for drivers who offer exceptional service."

The app can be downloaded free from the iTunes AppStore. Android, Blackberry and Phone7 versions of goCatch will be available in the coming months.
