Today, Traralgon based electrical contracting business Grouts Electrical won a top electrical award in Victoria for their work in repairing the Mt Tassie Transmission Station following the Black Saturday bushfires.

The Mt Tassie Transmission Station is responsible for the majority of television and radio transmissions for the Gippsland area.

Grouts Electrical were recognised at the annual electrical industry Excellence Awards hosted by peak Australian industry body the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) at Crown in Melbourne today (Friday 22 July 2011).

Chief executive officer of NECA’s Victoria, Mr Philip Green, said the judges chose Grouts Electrical for the top award in the small contracting business category because they overcame the significant challenges from the bushfire while working in a very isolated location.

“The team from Grouts Electrical won the top industry award for their commitment and professionalism during a long and challenging project,” Mr Green said.

“The team began work on this project the day after the Black Saturday bushfires where they were initially required to restore power. They continued to work at the transmission station for over 18 months to install new mains, generators, fuel systems, heating, cooling and fire fighting systems. A new office and workshop was also completed by Grouts Electrical at the site.

“The transmission station was a 45 minutes drive from the nearest main town of Traralgon and the team had to deal with extreme weather conditions that made the project even more difficult.”

The NECA Excellence Awards also recognised the achievements of six other companies across the state in categories ranging from residential and domestic installations through to large commercial contracts.

The electrical industry continues to grow and Victorian businesses are leading Australia in the type of work that is being undertaken.

“It is very pleasing to see Victorian electrical and communication contractors leading the country in everything from recovery work, occupational health and safety through to energy efficiency and the wiring of smart homes.”
